These can all be small surface marks that would not affect the potatoes marketable qualities right through to full coverage. Anything above 10% skin coverage will reduce a potatoes market value.

As bags of seed arrive on farm, check the label and a full QC should be carried out before the bags are emptied. Bags should be emptied as soon as possible after arriving and if not being planted within a couple of days, either put in a store with good air movement or a cold store. Harvest 2020 has been an ordeal that is still going on for some, especially in parts of the East of the UK. The rain in August had water levels rising to surface levels and higher. Then came three weeks of dry that allowed many crops to be harvested in excellent conditions but by the end it was too dry leading to high levels of bruising in ware crops. This was followed by many days of heavy rain that have saturated soils leaving many fields under water and not passable by foot let alone machinery. Crops are now being lifted slowly using a lot of machinery and manpower filling boxes with a lot of soil, rots and some potatoes. If possible, these potatoes should be run over a grader or pre cleaner to remove the worst of the soil and rots, then dry the boxes for as long as possible to dry and cure the potatoes. Long storage is not recommended for any late, wet lifted potatoes and these should be sold as soon as possible.

Black dot, Collectotrichum Coccodes, a soil borne fungal disease, can effect plant sterns, roots, stolons and tubers towards the end of the growing season. The disease will develop faster in warm, wet soils and continue to slowly develop once cooled in store. The tubers will have small greyish brown patches that start to develop on the tuber surface. The small black dots, microsclerotia, are just visible to the eye but can be clearly seen with a hand lens. Black dot is less common than silver scurf and does look similar at a glance. With the use of a lens the black dot microsclerotia are small dots further apart than the whispy black lines of silver scurf. Tubers going into store with black dot should be dried and pulled down to holding temperature quicker than normal to slow the progress. The stored tubers will turn a darker brown colour over time making selling into the pre-pack market difficult. The microsclerotia survive in the soil on ground keepers and on other plant root systems. Best practice is for long rotation, plant clean seed and harvest early.
